What is Cupping?

Cupping is an ancient healing technique used at Beyond Wellness Chiropractic in Savage, MN, to help overcome stagnant muscle tissue and promote healing. During cupping therapy, special cups are placed on the skin to create a suction effect. This suction increases blood flow to the treated area, helping to relax muscles and improve overall function.

How Cupping Works

During a cupping session, Dr. Stephanie Foust will place silicone cups on your skin and create a vacuum effect. This draws the skin and underlying tissues into the cups, which helps to increase blood flow and relieve muscle tension. The cups may be left in place for a few minutes or longer depending on the patient’s injury and the best approach for their body.

Benefits of Cupping

  • Increases Blood Flow: Enhances circulation to the treated areas, supporting faster healing and reducing muscle tension.
  • Relieves Muscle Tension: Helps to relax tight muscles and improve flexibility.
  • Promotes Healing: Stimulates the body's natural healing processes by increasing blood flow and reducing stagnation.
  • Reduces Pain: Alleviates discomfort and pain in muscles and joints.
  • Improves Skin Health: Can help with the appearance of the skin by increasing circulation and promoting relaxation.

Areas of the Body Where Cupping is Commonly Used

  • Back: To relieve tension and pain, and improve circulation in the back muscles.
  • Shoulders: To help reduce shoulder tension and discomfort.
  • Neck: To alleviate stiffness and enhance mobility.
  • Legs: To improve circulation and relieve muscle fatigue in the thighs and calves.
  • Arms: To support muscle relaxation and reduce soreness in the arms.
  • Abdomen: For digestive issues and to relieve tension in the abdominal area.

What to Expect During Your Cupping Session

During your cupping session, you may feel a mild pulling sensation as the cups create suction on your skin. The treatment is generally comfortable and can leave temporary marks on your skin, which are normal and will fade over time. Many people find cupping to be relaxing and notice improvements in muscle tension and overall well-being after their session.
